Simple, Yet Whimsical Wedding Photo Shoot
As a new planner still building my clientele portfolio, I decided to work with a local venue this past summer on a photo shoot – also known in the wedding industry as a styled shoot – to be able to show you some of my design ideas and talents. After selecting Orchard Lane Events Banquet Center, I quickly concluded that the theme for this shoot should reflect a simple, yet whimsical wedding. As I began choosing the color scheme, I realized that purple isn’t just a summer wedding color anymore!
A Little History About Orchard Lane Events Banquet Center
The venue was built in the early 1970s by the Lane Family and opened as The Apple Tree Restaurant. The property was home to the Lanes for many generations, where they had several acres of apple trees and an apple barn from which they sold their produce. One of the highlights of this venue is the view – it sits at the highest elevation in Greene County, Ohio!

The Apple Tree Restaurant was one of the finer restaurants in the area from the mid-70s to the mid-80s. People would drive from miles away to enjoy a meal at the restaurant “up on the hill.” Nathan Lane was a trained chef and he entertained many well-to-do clients – including a United States President!
After the restaurant closed in the mid-1980s, the building was sold and operated as the Apple Hill Banquet Center for some time. However, it also closed in the mid-2000s and was sold to new owners. In 2014, the new owner reopened the venue as Orchard Lane Events Banquet Center with the help of newly hired Operations Manager, Pat Keefe. Pat and her daughter, Maureen Johnson (Events Manager) now host close to 50 special events and weddings each year.
Planning the Photo Shoot
It was impossible to plan the décor for this photo shoot without including apples in some way. After all, Orchard Lane Events sits on a former apple orchard! As I was thinking of the theme and selecting colors, I thought about the industry’s “color of the year” – a brilliant purple color – and I decided I wanted to incorporate it in some way in this whimsical wedding theme.
But, if you are already a follower of mine or have read some of my other blogs, you know that I am not a fan of following a trend simply because someone, somewhere decided it was the year’s trend. I am all about helping brides and grooms develop their own style for their wedding – I want you to write your own story!
I also knew that, even though this shoot was taking place in July, the photos and this article would not be published until fall. So, I started thinking about how to incorporate purple tints, shades and hues into a fall theme. Simple! Just add yellow, green and orange!
So, the theme quickly evolved into what you are seeing here today! A simple décor theme – one where each of you can envision your own style and colors in this amazing venue. And yet, a theme that reflects the history of Orchard Lane Events and takes full advantage of the beautiful surroundings.
The result: What we lovingly called our “Apple-Y Wed Styled Shoot.” With small touches like the invitations, apple name cards, apple sticks and table numbers from Christy Kerley of Paper Blooms ‘n’ More and the addition of the delicious candied apples from Karalee Johnson of LaPuf Sweets – the rest of the décor quickly evolved.
Amazing Vendor Partnerships
Photo shoots, styled shoots, weddings, or any other event could never be successful without the amazing vendors that work so hard at what they do. I am so grateful for the partnerships I have formed with my vendor colleagues – and even more thankful for the friendships that have developed.
So, I want to close this blog by thanking all the vendors who participated in this shoot. Everyone was amazing!
